The Library has arranged open access memberships with a number of publishers providing discounts on article processing charges (APCs). To obtain the benefits, apply for open access funding as normal.

Membership schemes

ACS Author Rewards

Authors who earned ACS Author Rewards article credits for publishing in an ACS journal in 2014 were be able to redeem these credits for all ACS Journals, until the December 31, 2017. From the beginning of the year 2018, the Author Rewards promo codes can be redeemed only for publication in ACS Omega.

American Physical Society

Beginning January 1, 2018, APS will be participating in the second phase of SCOAP3 . All high-energy physics papers in

  • Physical Review Letters (PRL)
  • Physical Review C (PRC)
  • Physical Review D (PRD)

All under a CC-BY license at no cost to the authors.

Journals not part of the deal:

  • PHYSICAL REVIEW X (OPEN ACCESS)
  • PHYSICAL REVIEW ACCELERATORS AND BEAMS (OPEN ACCESS)
  • PHYSICAL REVIEW PHYSICS EDUCATION RESEARCH (OPEN ACCESS) PHYSICS (OPEN ACCESS)

Authors should not have to apply for open access funding if publishing with the three journals that form part of SCOAP3.

BioMed Central

This membership provides Imperial authors with a 15% discount on APCs for articles accepted for publication in BioMed Central and Springer Open journals. The corresponding author must be affiliated with Imperial to qualify for the discount.

To ensure you receive a discount, either submit your article while on-campus or, if off-campus, use your Imperial email address and select Option 3 plus Imperial College London from the drop down list, as well as using an imperial.ac.uk email address. 

As this membership only provides a discount on the APC please apply for APC funding via Symplectic in the usual way.

BioMed Central

BMJ Open Access Programme

This supporter membership provides Imperial authors with a 25% discount on APCs for articles accepted for publication in BMJ Publishing journals.

To ensure you receive a discount, provide BMJ with your application number (e.g. OAA00XXXXX) when you order open access. In return, BMJ will supply a discount code to be entered into RightsLink when requesting the invoice. Please email openaccess@imperial.ac.uk if BMJ do not supply the discount code.

As this membership only provides a discount on the APC please apply for APC funding via Symplectic in the usual way.

F1000

One free submission for F1000Workspace users.

If you use F1000Workspace, you are eligible to publish one article free from an article processing charge if the article is authored and submitted via F1000Workspace using the F1000Workspace Word plugin. This offer is valid until 30 June 2019 and is open to articles of any size.

Hindawi

From 5 October 2017 till 5 October 2018 the College has Associate Membership which provides Imperial authors with a 10% discount on APCs for articles accepted for publication in Hindawi Journals.

If you are funded by a grant that covers open access publishing please apply for funding via Symplectic in the usual way by depositing your manuscript.

IEEE

From November 2017 to 30 November 2018 Imperial College London participated and paid towards the Unlimited Funded IEEE Gold Open Access scheme which meant free open access publication in 140+ journals.

The Library has decided to not continue with this beyond November.

MDPI - Institutional Open Access Program

• Authors associated with Imperial College London will receive a 10% discount on the Article Processing Charges (APC)
• APCs apply for accepted articles vary between 0 € and 1580 € depending on the journal submitted to
• The average invoice in 2016 was approximately 800 €.
• The program also grants authors a reduction on the Book Processing Charges (BPCs) for MDPI Books (http://www.mdpi.com/books).

This discount applies automatically when submitting to the journal – if you wish it to be paid from RCUK/COAF or Imperial College London funds please apply for APC funding via Symplectic in the usual way.

PeerJ

Imperial has deposited funds with PeerJ to cover the costs of publishing open access. When your paper is accepted for publication in PeerJ, the Publication Plan fees will be automatically paid via the PeerJ site.

Please ensure you use your Imperial email address when submitting your paper for publication.

Public Library of Science (PLoS)

Imperial College London is a participant in the PLoS Institutional Account Program. To be eligible for institutional fee support, the author must be the corresponding author and affiliated with Imperial.

At acceptance, the publication fee will be paid from prepaid funds deposited by the Library.

As this agreement only changes the way that invoices are paid, please apply for APC funding via Symplectic in the usual way.  If you receive an invoice in error please send it to the Open Access Team.

Royal Society

From January 2016 the College has standard OA membership, which entitles Imperial authors to 25% discount from the cost of making your article open access.

Note that from 1 January 2016 all authors who submit to Royal Society journals will be required to have an ORCID iD.

RSC Gold 4 Gold vouchers

As an RSC Gold subscriber, Imperial College London receives a 15% discount on Gold Open Access article processing charges, where the corresponding author of the article is based here. This applies to APCs in all hybrid journals but not to the discounted APC currently offered for RSC Advances.

RSC's licensing system has the ability to recognise that a corresponding author is at Imperial through their email domain and automatically applies the discount so please do use your Imperial email address when applying.

SAGE Choice discount

Imperial authors are entitled to a discounted APC rate of £200 for all SAGE Choice titles (hybrid OA).

This discount cannot be applied retroactively, so please apply for funding via Symplectic before you complete your SAGE Choice order.

Springer

Imperial is participating in the Springer Compact agreement. Article processing charges in a Springer Open Choice journal are covered by this agreement for Imperial corresponding authors.

The agreement covers the following outputs; Original Paper, Review Paper, Brief Communication and Continuing Education

You must confirm that you are the corresponding author and that you are affiliated to an eligible UK institution.

Springer will verify the details with the OA Team and then your article will be published open access with a CC BY licence.

You are advised to use your Imperial College London email address instead of your private email address. This enables Springer to better identify you as eligible under the agreement.

The agreement does not cover Springer Open Access journals or BioMed Central journals and 30 Open Choice journals that do not offer CC BY licensing.

Taylor & Francis APC allowance scheme

Imperial authors are entitled to use discount vouchers, reducing the cost of publishing in hybrid open access journals to £450.00. Please apply for funding in the usual way. If you know you are not eligible for funding, please use your Imperial e-mail address and identify yourself as from Imperial, the discount can then be given automatically by the publisher.
