Study/Research Year Abroad

Many of our programmes of study have a study/research abroad degree option – see our course list to see if this is available in your department. Opportunities exist to spend a complete year in Europe or further afield in the USA, Australia or Singapore through academic partnerships. Places are normally offered on a competitive basis and typically you need to be performing at a certain academic standard. You may also need to demonstrate language abilities so you might want to consider a free language course within the curriculum as part of Imperial Horizons or attend an Evening Language Class to boost your level of proficiency.

A year abroad will challenge you personally and professionally within a different academic and cultural environment. The experience is often seen as a differentiator and our students often cite the ability to better demonstrate adaptability, independence and a global curiosity. You will return with a new perspective on culture, language skills, and a willingness to learn – all of which are very attractive to future employers. (perhaps the video could be alongside this bit of the text?)

For further information please visit the College webpage Study Abroad to explore the opportunities available to you and speak to your academic department to discuss your suitability and any timeframes which will apply.

Postgraduate study abroad

Increasingly may of our students look to pursue further study outside the UK on completion of their undergraduate degree. Study abroad will give you the chance to learn about another culture, develop international experience and work with specialists in another country. If you’re considering further study abroad then it is worth reading our Further Study and Funding webpage along with this information as applying for a course needs careful planning and may involve considerable financial commitment.

Our top tips:

  • Explore your options as early as you can – to secure full scholarships you may need to start researching and applying 18 months to 2 years before the start date for the programme.
  • Make contact with the universities and departments you’re interested in and get detailed information about their programmes to help you make informed decisions.
  • Check entry requirements – you may need to pass entry tests (e.g. GRE) that often have specific time restrictions. Our support pages on Psychometric Tests may assist with your preparation for these tests.
  • Academic years may be different to the UK; for example Australia starts the new academic year in February (after their long summer recess)
